How to Use XMP Files in Lightroom

Updated June 2025

What is an XMP sidecar?

An XMP sidecar is a small text file that stores Lightroom develop settings separately from your RAW file. GetXMP generates these using Claude Sonnet and Adobe's PV2012 process version — the same format Lightroom uses natively.

Step 1: Match filenames

Your XMP file must share the same base name as your RAW file. For example, if your RAW is DSC01234.ARW, the sidecar should be DSC01234.xmp. Place both files in the same folder on your computer or external drive.

Step 2: Import or sync in Lightroom

On import: If the XMP is already next to the RAW when you import, Lightroom reads the settings automatically.

In an existing catalog: Select the photo(s), then go to Metadata → Read Metadata from File. Lightroom applies the develop settings from the sidecar.

Step 3: Fine-tune your edit

GetXMP gives you a strong starting point — global adjustments only (exposure, contrast, color, etc.). You can still add local adjustments, masks, and your own creative finishing in Lightroom.

White balance note

By default, GetXMP sets white balance to As Shot, preserving your camera's original color rendering. If you asked for a warmer or cooler look in your instruction, temperature and tint adjustments may be included.

Troubleshooting

  • Settings not appearing? Confirm the XMP filename exactly matches the RAW.
  • Settings look wrong? Re-read metadata after replacing the XMP file.
  • Using Lightroom CC? Sidecar sync works the same way via metadata read.
